Silks and Shenanigans: 🐎 The Headline Review: “The Old Guard Strikes Back”

Whether you’re currently nursing a celebratory pint of Guinness or a severely bruised bankroll, St. Patrick’s Thursday 2026 was a reminder that Cheltenham is where “certainties” go to die and old legends come to life.

It was a day for the veterans, the outsiders, and a few Skelton-sized sighs of relief. Here is the insider breakdown of today’s action.

If today had a theme, it was “Persistence Pays.” The Stayers’ Shock: In a result that had the bookies dancing a jig, Home By The Lee (33/1) finally climbed the mountain at the fifth time of asking. He outstayed the young pretenders like Ballyburn, proving that sometimes you just need to be 11 years old and hard as teak to conquer the New Course.

• The “Always a Bridesmaid” Award: Spare a thought for Jonbon. He ran his heart out in the Ryanair, but in a recurring nightmare for Nicky Henderson fans, he finished second at the Festival for the fourth time. Heart Wood (9/2) was simply too clinical, providing Henry de Bromhead with his customary “big race” trophy.

• The Skelton Save: After a morning of 40/1 and 22/1 winners, Supremely West (10/3F) finally gave the punters something to cheer about in the Pertemps. Harry Skelton rode it like he owned the place, a textbook front-running masterclass that stopped the bleeding for many.

💡 The “Nap” Report: Winners & Losers

• The Successful Nap: Supremely West was the standout selection for many “Value Bet” and Timeform Daily followers. He was backed as if defeat was impossible, and he duly obliged.

• The “Should Have Known” Nap: Wodhooh (5/6F) in the Mares’ Hurdle. While she won, it was a “workmanlike” performance that didn’t necessarily scream “Star of the Future,” though favorite backers won’t care.

• The Heartbreaker: Ballyburn was the “banker of the week” for half of Ireland in the Stayers’, but the step up in trip proved a bridge too far against the seasoned stayers.

For the final day of the 2026 Cheltenham Festival (Gold Cup Day), Timeform’s ratings and top selections highlight a mix of established stars and progressive second-season chasers.

The feature race is wide open this year following the absence of former dual winner Galopin des Champs. Willie Mullins relies on the top-rated Gaelic Warrior, but Timeform’s analysts have a specific preference for one of the progressive British chasers

🏆 Tomorrow’s Gold Cup “Insider” Preview

The whispers in the Centaur tonight are all about Gaelic Warrior (7/2). Timeform currently has him top-rated at 183, but there’s a massive “p” attached to Inothewayurthinkin (181?).

Insider Tip: If the ground stays “Good to Soft,” look at Jango Baie. He’s the “Timeform Verdict” for the Gold Cup, he’s got the King George form and the engine to cause another upset.

Will add more to the blog tomorrow morning

The Gold Cup (16:00): Timeform gives the edge to Jango Baie (11/2). Despite finishing 4th in the King George at Kempton, the analysts believe the step up to the Gold Cup distance and the return to Cheltenham (where he is 2-for-2) will allow him to reverse the form with Gaelic Warrior and The Jukebox Man.

• Top Rated: Gaelic Warrior holds the highest raw rating at 183, but Jango Baie is the “p” (improver) pick for the victory.

• Triumph Hurdle (13:20): This is framed as a “David vs. Goliath” match. Timeform highlights Minella Study (rated 139) from Adam Nicol’s small yard as the one to beat the Willie Mullins battalion, which is led by Proactif.

• Mares’ Chase (14:40): Dinoblue is the clear class act here according to the ratings, though stablemate Spindleberry is noted as a primary threat if the ground stays testing.

• The “Handicap Snip”: Keep an eye on Panic Attack in the earlier races; Timeform noted earlier in the week that she was one of the best-handicapped horses of the entire festival following her Coral Gold Cup win.

The Verdict

If you are looking for the “Nap” (best bet) of the day, Jango Baie is the Timeform analyst’s standout selection for the feature, while Minella Study is the preferred choice for those looking to take on the Irish favorites in the opener, it has been a tricky Cheltenham for punters this year. Gaelic Warrior is the highest rated horse 🐴 in the Gold Cup.
